Cubs Minor League Recap (4/20)

Another big day for pitching and offense in the Cubs farm system.

Single-A South Bend

Cubs split doubleheader 1-0, 1-3.

  • Cubs #27 prospect, RHP Riley Thompson dominated in game one. Thompson fired 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just a trio of hits while striking out five and walking none. His ERA stands at a stellar 0.61 through 3 starts (14 2/3 innings).
  • OF D.J. Artis went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI in game one.
  • LHP Faustino Carrera pitched 4.0 innings in game two, allowing three hits and two earned runs. Carrera struck out six and walked one. He, unfortunately, allowed a pair of homers that hurt his ERA.

High-A Myrtle Beach

Pelicans won both games of doubleheader 4-2, 4-1.

  • RHP Paul Richan picked up his 2nd consecutive win with 5.0 strong innings in game one. Richan allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out three. He’s allowed just two earned runs in 3 starts (13 2/3 innings) this season.
  • OF Jimmy Herron went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI including a solo homer in game one.
  • RHP Javier Assad recorded another nice start in game two. Assad went 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and an earned run. He struck out four and walked one.
  • 2B Cam Balego went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

Double-A Tennessee

Smokies beat Chattanooga 6-2.

  • Cubs #19 prospect, RHP Tyson Miller tossed 3.0 no-hit innings. Miller struck out one and walked two, decreasing his ERA to 0.69 this season (3 starts).
  • Cubs #2 prospect, SS Nico Hoerner went 1-for-4 with 2 runs scored.
  • 3B Robel Garcia went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Garcia is off to a hot start, batting .375 with 2 homers and 9 RBI through 5 games.
  • 1B P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored.

Triple-A Iowa

Cubs crushed Oklahoma City 11-1.

  • CF Ian Happ went 1-for-4 with 1 RBI, a walk, and a run scored.
  • RHP Trevor Clifton pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings, allowing one hit. Clifton struck out five and walked three. He has yet to allow a run through 3 starts (8 1/3 innings) this season.
  • Cubs #20 prospect, 2B Trent Giambrone went 1-for-5 with a 3-run homer. Giambrone has now homered 6 times through 15 games this season.
  • OF Johnny Field went 2-for-5 with 3 RBI including a solo homer. Field is 4-for-10 with 7 RBI in his last 2 games.
  • SS Dixon Machado went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, 2 walks, and a run scored. Machado is 4-for-12 in his last 3 games with 6 RBI.
