Cubs Minor League Recap (4/13)

Another solid day for the Cubs farm system with exceptional pitching in South Bend.

Single-A South Bend

Cubs beat Lansing 6-0.

  • Cubs #27-ranked prospect, RHP Riley Thompson went 5.0 innings allowing just four hits. Thompson struck out five and walked one in the shutout, picking up the win.
  • Cubs #15-ranked prospect, OF Nelson Velazquez went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Velazquez’s batting average improves to .333 this season through 10 games.
  • Cubs #5-ranked prospect, OF Cole Roederer went 1-for-4 with 1 RBI.
  • 1B Tyler Durna went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Durna’s also having a great season, batting .316.
  • RHP Jeff Passantino had another solid long-relief outing. Passantino allowed one hit in 3.0 innings while striking out two.

High-A Myrtle Beach

Pelicans fell to Fayetteville 6-4.

  • 1B Luke Reynolds went 1-for-5 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Reynolds has reached base safely in 5 of his last 6 games.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda went 1-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored. After being sidelined for basically the last two seasons due to injuries, Sepulveda is off to a great start in 2019. He’s slashing .280/.357/.280 through 8 games.

Double-A Tennessee

Smokies fell to Birmingham 4-2.

  • C P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and a run scored. Higgins has been primarily at first base this season and it’s helped his offense. He’s batting .333/.467/.583 in 7 games.
  • 1B Jared Young went 2-for-4.
  • RHP Zach Hedges yielded four hits and one earned run in 4.0 innings. Hedges struck out two and walked none.

Triple-A Iowa

Cubs lost G1 of DH 3-0 and won G2 of DH 2-1.

Game 2:

  • Cubs #20-ranked prospect, INF Trent Giambrone went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and a run scored. Giambrone is batting .265 with 3 homers and 7 RBI through 8 games.
  • OF Donnie Dewees went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI and a walk. Dewees is batting .250/.318/.500 since the Cubs picked him back up.
  • RHP Colin Rea fired 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and an unearned run. Rea struck out five and walked three, earing the win.
