Cubs Minor League Recap (5/23)

Great pitching from Faustino Carrera and Matt Swarmer led the Cubs farm system on Thursday night.

Single-A South Bend

Cubs fell to Fort Wayne 3-2.

  • LHP Faustino Carrera was excellent again over 6.0 innings. Carrera allowed only 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4. He is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA in 7 starts.
  • #30 prospect, DH/SS Andy Weber went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Weber is now batting .365 in his last 10 games.
  • #5 prospect, OF Cole Roederer went 1-for-4 with a solo homer.

High-A Myrtle Beach

Pelicans fell to Frederick 8-7.

  • OF Grant Fennell went 2-for-5 with a 2-run homer for a total of 3 RBI. Fennell is 4-for-9 with 4 RBI in his last 2 games.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 walks. Sepulveda is batting .313 with 5 RBI and 7 walks in his last 10 games.
  • C Tyler Payne went 2-for-5 with a 2-run homer. Payne is batting .310 through 32 games this season.

Double-A Tennessee

Smokies fell to Pensacola 10-5.

  • 3B P.J. Higgins went  1-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 walks.
  • 1B Gioskar Amaya went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Triple-A Iowa

Cubs beat Omaha 3-2.

  • DH/CF Ian Happ went 0-for-4 with 2 strikeouts.
  • RHP Matt Swarmer allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs in 6.0 innings. Swarmer struck out six and walked two in the quality start.
  • RHP Dakota Mekkes came in after Swarmer, picking up the win with 2.0 scoreless frames. Mekkes now has 4 straight scoreless appearances, 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA this season.
  • OF Johnny Field went 1-for-4 with a 2-run homer. Field has 6 homers and 28 RBI in 41 games this season. He is batting .271.
