Cubs Minor League Recap (5/5)

The pitching was on a roll again as well as the offense in the Cubs farm system on Sunday.

Single-A South Bend

Cubs beat Clinton 3-2.

  • #3 prospect, LHP Brailyn Marquez had another strong start. Marquez allowed three hits and no earned runs over 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Marquez now has 30 strikeouts in 20.0 innings this season.
  • OF D.J. Artis went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI, 2 runs scored, and 2 walks. Artis has reached base in 6 straight games, batting .258 with 14 RBIs this season.

High-A Myrtle Beach

Pelicans crushed Salem 8-2.

  • LHP Luis Lugo was excellent over 5.0 innings. Lugo allowed six hits and one earned run. He struck out two and walked none.
  • OF Grant Fennell went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Fennell has 6 RBI in his last 4 games.
  • OF Jimmy Herron went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Herron is now 8-for-16 in his last 5 games.
  • C Tyler Payne went 3-for-4 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Payne is off to a great start this season, batting .313 through 19 games.

Double-A Tennessee

Smokies fell to Jackson 3-0.

  • #22 prospect, RHP Oscar De La Cruz had another strong outing despite the loss. De La Cruz allowed just one hit and one earned run in 5.0 innings. He struck out five and walked four. De La Cruz has allowed just three earned runs in 20.0 innings (4 starts) this season.
  • 1B P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4.

Triple-A Iowa

Cubs destroyed Omaha 8-1.

  • 2B Addison Russell went 2-for-5 with a solo homer. Russell is 9-for-36 (.250) with 3 homers and 13 RBI since joining Iowa through 10 games.
  • CF Ian Happ went 2-for-5 with a solo homer.
  • RHP Matt Swarmer picked up the win after 5.0 solid innings. Swarmer allowed just five hits and one earned run. He struck out six and walked two.
  • OF Donnie Dewees went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Dewees hot start to the season continues, batting .348 with 3 homers and 14 RBI through 23 games. He’s batting .472 over his last 10 games alone.
