Cubs Minor League Recap (7/8)

The Cubs farm system went 2-3 on Sunday.

Low-A Eugene

Emeralds fell to Salem-Keizer 10-7.

  • DH/OF Nelson Maldonado went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI.
  • 2B Chase Strumpf went 4-for-5 with 1 RBI.
  • 3B Yonathan Perlaza went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI.
  • Strumpf was the Cubs 2nd round pick this year and Maldonado was their 21st round pick this year.

Single-A South Bend

Cubs shutout and destroyed Dayton 10-0.

  • RHP Riley Thompson was excellent again with 5.0 shutout innings. Thompson allowed just 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking none. He has a 2.35 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 14 starts this season.
  • 3B Chris Morel went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI and a triple. Morel has a hit in 8 of his last 10 games, hitting .436 during the stretch. Overall this season, he’s batting .285 with 6 homers and 29 RBI in 70 games.
  • DH/OF Brennen Davis went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Davis is still on fire this season, hitting .306 with 5 home runs and 19 RBI in 38 games.
  • 1B Fidel Mejia went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.

High-A Myrtle Beach

Pelicans fell to Down East 7-0.

  • RHP Paul Richan pitched 6.0 solid innings despite the loss. Richan allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 5. He has allowed just 3 earned runs in his last 13.0 innings (2 starts).

Double-A Tennessee

Smokies lost to Montgomery 5-0.

Triple-A Iowa

Cubs beat Memphis 8-5 on 12 hits.

  • 3B Trent Giambrone went 2-for-5 with a 3-run homer. Giambrone now has 19 home runs and 48 RBI in 84 games this season.
  • CF Ian Happ went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI. Happ is hitting .325 with 7 RBI and 8 walks over his last 10 games.
  • 2B/SS Zack Short went 2-for-4 with a run scored and 1 walk. Short is now hitting .367 in 9 games this season for Iowa.
