Heading into May 3rd, Cubs pitching prospect RHP Javier Assad was 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA. In the first inning of that game, Assad made an incredible out soccer-style. Ever since his crazy kick of the ball for an out at first, Assad hasn’t allowed a run.
Assad is 2-0 with 18 strikeouts in 19.0 innings (3 starts) during this stretch. Opponents have hit just .086 against him in May. His ERA now sits at 2.19 and WHIP at 0.97. As a result, Assad is the back-to-back Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.
His start last Wednesday was the best of his career. Assad faced the minimum through 7.0 innings, allowing only a single while striking out 9. He’s on the mound again Tuesday night, looking to keep up the dominance.
