In exchange, the Cubs are sending pitching prospects Alex Lange and Paul Richan.
Castellanos figures to be the Cubs new leadoff hitter. He is hitting .273 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 100 games for the Tigers this season. Castellanos has been with the Tigers since 2013.
He signed a 1 year, $9.95-million deal before this season, becoming an unrestricted free agent again in the winter.
Castellanos fills the last void for the Cubs, hoping to make another deep playoff run.
